The Sevenoaks Society is an association of local people who care about the character and appearance of the town and its surroundings.

With the ever increasing developments and change of use of old buildings, the face of our town is altering faster than ever before. Unless we are vigilant, much which is characteristic of the Sevenoaks we know could be marred or disappear altogether.

The responsibility for ensuring that the best of what we have is preserved, and that new development is appropriate to the town, rests on the local authorities. But they need the support of an informed and alert public opinion. This the Society seeks to create and represent.

We therefore:

• Encourage people to look appreciatively and critically at their surroundings;
• Study plans and proposals for redevelopment and put forward our comments and suggestions to the local authorities;
• Walk the network of traditional footpaths around the town to ensure that they are kept open;
• Attempt to prevent the needless destruction of trees threatened by development;
• Study and publicise the history of the town.
