London Road East:                                                        Sheet Ten

History:

Block of four two storey  buildings with roof attics joined in shape of ‘L’ in 1867 to form no. 24, three were rendered on ground floor with upper parts and gable end tile hung.  Rebuilt 1918 and reclad in 1950 after fire, Arts and Crafts restoration over earlier structure.  A cellar may exist still. 

Seedsman – W Seale and Son from 1869 to 1919

Undertaker – W Hodges 1940 to after 1969 when building divided.

First floor – offices

Description: 

On two floors with shops fronts on ground floor. 

Ground floor: no. 24 has entrance door at 45 degree splayed corner between London Road and Dorset Street with four large display windows of unequal width on low rendered stall riser, two on London Road separated by hardwood faced pilaster, the LHS having nine square panes of glass and two on Dorset Street return, one large, one small.  Medium depth fascia with deep lead flashing over. 

Ground floor: no. 24a has central single entrance door between splayed display windows divided into small square panes on low brick stall riser and piers at each end.  Central timber post supports hardwood fascia with large but not too obtrusive sign ‘Lime Tree Studios’ and lead flashing. 

First floor tile hung with three small metal casement windows in painted timber frames under three small dormer roofs facing the London Road with gable panels filled with stained ‘half-timbering’, plaster infill and stained hardwood barge boards.  South elevation to Dorset Street tile hung with single metal casement window in painted timber frame under large gable end to roof, also ‘half-timbered’ with plaster infill. 

Roof plain clay tiles unbroken except for dormers and small chimney stack at junction of two buildings and with tiled ridge. 

Comment:

Good scale and link with Dorset Street buildings behind and adds variety to the street scene, details variable.
